In the Beginning
In the mid to late 19th century there was burgeoning interest in matters paranormal. Séances, psychic phenomena, telepathy, thought transference and clairvoyance were subjects of heated discussion. Masonic, Rosicrucian and Cabalistic groups of generations earlier flourished.
Annie Besant
Annie Besant (1847–1933) had a wide reputation in Victorian England as a Freethinker. Breaking with tradition she left her husband Reverend Frank Besant in 1873 and alone began a career as a vibrant public speaker and pamphleteer. She was an ardent suffragette.
Krishnamurti and Nitya
In May of 1895 in a cramped house in Madanapalle, in the south of India, a child was born. The eighth child of an orthodox Telegu speaking Brahmin family, his mother Sanjeevama, and father Narayaniah named him Krishnamurti.
Discovered on the Beach
Strolling on the beach at Adyar, C.W. Leadbeater saw the young Krishnamurti. He immediately perceived an aura so radiant that he declared the fourteen year old was to be the vehicle for the World Teacher prophesied by Theosophists.
The Order of the Star
Mrs. Besant’s idea was that this boy should be trained and educated in England for this tremendous role. And the following year she founded “The Order of the Star in the East.” And Krishnamurti was made the head of it.
Truth Is a Pathless Land
I maintain that Truth is a pathless land and cannot be approached by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. Truth being limitless, unconditioned, cannot be organized, nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along any particular path.
The Teachings Mature
So you want to know now what K thinks of the World-Teacher? I really don’t know. He has never said: “Who am I.” Is this question relevant at all? What is relevant are the teachings. Who the teacher is is not relevant.
The Process Intensifies
The whole process has been going on all day – the pressure, the strain and the pain at the back of the head; woke up shouting several times, and even during the day there was involuntary groaning and shouting. Last night that sacred feeling filled the room and the other felt it also.
A Light to Yourself
Nobody on earth or in heaven can give you that light, except yourself, in your own understanding and meditation. And to die to every thing within oneself, for love is innocent and fresh, young and clear.
The Real Revolution
What we are trying, in all these discussions and talks here, is to see if we cannot radically bring about a transformation of the mind. Not accept things as they are. Nor revolt against it – but to understand it, to go into it, to examine it; give your heart and your mind with everything that you have to find out a way of living differently.
The Wholeness of Life
In yourself lies the whole world and if you know how to look and learn, then the door is there and the key is in your hand. Nobody on earth can give you either that key or that door to open except yourself.
The Perfume of the Teachings
When one sees something true and beautiful one wants to tell people about it, out of affection, out of compassion, out of love. And if there are those who are not interested, that is all right. Can you ask a flower why it grows, why it has perfume? It is for the same reason that the speaker talks.
